My '91 420 SEL with 180K mi. started leaking oil profusely out of the hole in the side of the crankcase just in front of the cover plate on the drivers side that covers where the starter would bolt if it were on the Drivers side. The hole just goes through the case to the space where crank bolts to the plates that bolt to the torque converter etc.
What is the best way to determine the source of the leak? I suspect the rear crank seal, but hate to pull the transmission off without eliminating any other possibility first. Ive been driving MBs for 25 yrs and never had a rear crank seal start leaking before. What are my options? Is there any other potential source of a leak in this location? Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks Rick |

If it's a rear main bearing seal leak, you can drop the pan and then the rear main bearing cap and replace the seal rather easily.
If it's atf fluid, obviously there is something wrong at the torque converter - maybe the plug has come loose?

Thanks for the advice. It's definintely engine oil. I think it might be the rear crankshaft sealing ring. Is there any way to tell what is causing the leak without pulling the transmission off?

The rear main seal on that engine is NOT replaceable unless the torque converter and the ring rear are removed. After 15 years or so they start to leak. A common problem.

You don't remove the pan to do a rear main seal on that engine. They also seldom leak. The left head gasket is a common leak and anything into the valley comes out somewhere back there.

rickwomble:
any update on your rear seal leak ( or perhaps head gasket leak)? I have lived with a slight left head gasket leak for years, and it has been always clear where the leak was coming from. however, lately the leak has progressed ( about 3" dia poddle each night). This time most is coming from the cover plate where engine and trans meet. It is not trans oil for sure. If it is indeed due to rear seal, I would be interested to know what you found on yours. thx |
