300E engine cuts out

I have a 1988 300E auto which has done 160,000 kms.
The vehicle runs perfectly but has an annoying habit which no one has been able to fix.
Perhaps a dozen times a year the motor will cut out without warning at low speed, most often when I'm braking to go around a sharp corner.
It's potentially quite dangerous as the power steering becomes inoperative and the car is hard to steer.
Does anyone know what might be causing this and how it can be fixed?
Suggestions most welcome.

Your idle control valve is sticking closed. Remove it and clean it out with brake parts cleaner, then replace the hoses from the boot under the air flow meter horn to the idle control valve and from the valve to the intake -- likely they are rock hard and leaking.

If the boot between the airflow meter horn and throttle body is loose, replace it too.

If it stalls while driving instead of when applying the brakes, replace the fuel pump relay and check the amperage draw from the fuel pumps -- if excessive, replace the pump that's pulling too much juice.

Thanks Peter, I'll give that a go.

Mostly, it is OVP relay problem.... Did you change the OVP relay before?
