Headlight moisture
 

My 2004 SLK 320 right front headlight (HID system) has traped moisture. Moisture appeared with onset of winter temperstures.

Do I need to replace the headlight?

If so, where do I go for good prices on OEM lights?

Can it be dis-assembeled and cleaned out?

If disassembly is not possible, can I remove the moisture with a low temp bake out?

Seems like it might just be a bad gasket. I don't know if there's an opening anywhere in those besides where the lamp goes in.

The answer is maybe it can be fixed. I had an earlier SLK with the same problem but it had halogen headlights. The prior owner told me the dealer told him they had to replace the entire assembly quoted at $700. I looked at the EPC online and saw the gasket is available for about $15. I ordered it, removed the assembly and replaced the rubber gasket...no more leaks. The entire job took me well under an hour, and I work slow.

The first thing you need to do is verify that for your car and HID headlights the assembly is re-sealable...some are and some are not. You can inquire at the dealer's parts counter or look here after setting up a free account:

Some MB's have had problems with insufficient venting of the headlight assemblies. Try this. Remove all bulb access covers from the affected light. Turn the lights on and run the engine for about twenty minutes. This will usually clear up the condensation. I've had great success using this method.
