Front End work on '87 TD

My tie-rods didn't pass inspection so I'm looking to do a bit of front end work. I plan to replace the following:

1) Tie-rods full assemblies on both sides
2) Struts and strut towers
3) Idler arm bushings
4) Steering shock

I've been quoted about 5 hrs of labor including the alignment.

Is this reasonable? Is there anything else I should consider doing while I'm at it?

Thanks,

If it includes the alignment, it is not too bad. The question is How much they charge per hour?

J.H.,

The price per hour I figured was too location dependant to be meaningful in this discussion. I would guess that the Manhattan rate (where I live) is at least twice the US average rate.

Luckily I found a place that isn't too far (by public transportation) in NJ. Still high, but closer to the average. Sounds like a topic for a different thread.

Don't forget the drag link - that's the great big tie rod which connects the pittman arm (on the steering box) to the idler arm. It has ball joints at either end, just like the tie-rods.

The upper strut mounts are also good candidates for replacement. These are rubber mounts which locate the top of the strut in the chassis of the car. They degrade over time which permits both noise, vibration, and harshness into the car, and also permit the top of the strut to move around a bit. It's kinda like having worn ball joints.

Speaking of which, you should have those checked too.

I don't know what "strut towers" are.

I don't know what "strut towers" are. [/B][/QUOTE]

These are the indendations at the top of the wheel well - actually tower-like in many vehicles - where the upper strut mount is attached. I've never seen one that was relaceable without a torch, though. He is probably referring to the upper mounts.

Steve,

Yes, I believe that what I call the strut towers are actually the upper strut mounts.

I'm hoping that the full asembly of the tie-rods includes the drag link. Of course, that is likely to be a futile hope.

Thanks for the feed back. I can't wait to drive it after this gets done tomorrow!
