89 300E death car
One of my family members doesn't beleive in mechnical servicing of her 1989 300E sedan M103 . there for I call her car the Death car because I never now when and were it will decide to quick and loose power, hopefully not behine a large ten wheeled semi, then I am screwed. We both own the same car mine is a 1992 and runs teriffic no problems. I think hers is cursed and is being called by the salvage yard demons to give it up, hopefully not while I am still in it. Several months ago after running for tires for her car I took the 300E home and experienced just a mile before the off ramp a missing and hesitation at 80 MPH so I backed off thought because she did not replace the fuel floot I was running out of Petro. As I wound down the ramp the engine quite and as luck be with me I ended up safely at the bottom of the ramp curb with a couple of snarled motorist honking because they had to go around me. I tried to restart the motor but the car was dead. Uh Ha bad battery I through glad I am a member of AAA. they arrived hooked the cables to the battery , and as they removed them it quite again. The nice guy suggested it sounded like it might be an alternator? Not being too mechinally inclined but knowing enough to be dangerious I had her death car toed back the 24 miles to Los Angeles were we proceeded to change the battery car ran but not for long this tme she got stuck. I am thinking about a sledge hammer but don't speak German , I would like to give it the old colledge try once more, any suggestions? before I bring it to MR MB motors in Trazana and give him a good laugh. Bob, sounds to me like the 1989 300E needs a new voltage regulator. Due to worn voltage regulator brushes the battery is not recharging after the engine starts. The voltage regulator attaches to the back of the alternator with 2 screws ... very easy to replace.
