Diesel Girl looking for some Gasser Help
Hi All,
I'm normally a MB diesel girl, but came across a gasser for sale that looks interesting. I'm looking for a bit of value help. Car is 1966, light blue, decent paint, no rust I could detect. Duel carb, 6 cyl, told it runs well, will see on test drive this after. 4 speed. Says 230 on the trunk Interior looks decent for the age, navy blue, a few rips in the driver seat, back seat looks fair. Beige carpet on back parcel tray. Seller was asking $4500 but lowered to $2900. Advice? If it runs and drives well, how much? If it needs some mechs done, how much? Thanks! |
you have enough for now... :)

How can I refuse him? |
The worst affliction for any old car, but especially a unibody mercedes is rust. So look everywhere, but check the rockers and wheel wells and trunk especially. Mechanically things can be fixed, rust is very often the death knell for these so have it examined closely for signs of past rust repairs. The price is not unreasonable if the car is rust free and drives reasonably well.

Thanks Marty!

* I guess we're talking about a W110 or W111 here. As others have pointed out, rust should very definitely your be your preeminent concern. Pay a shop to put it on the lift so that you can check it underneath. If it's been repainted, question why. Any service records, body shop records would be nice. This is the kind of deal where you could get the car for free and still spend $5k too much.
* Back in '66, as you probably well know, cars had grease fittings and got "lubed" as part of the routine maintenance. I think the W110 had 14 grease fittings, from the king-pin front end to the swing rear-axle. Look for dry components which haven't seen fresh grease in a while. Just for grins ask the dealer what it would cost to rebuild that old king-pin/trunnion front end. Don't forget to sit down first. * Of course you realize that even a perfect W110 doesn't have any business in today's highway traffic. You're likely to end up in a line of traffic going 70mph, with no place to slow down or retire to. This is what obsolete technology means. Your engine will be screaming and your brakes and steering won't be able to handle any dramatic changes. So you're spending your money to drive to the local grocery on nice days. That's ok if it's what you're looking for. But if not, it's not a good surprise. |
Yeah I don't think you're going to accomplish much in normal driving with a small carb engine....aside from consuming tons of gas. That car will be slow and thirsty.

1966...
you're looking at a Finback http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mercedes-Benz_W110 not bad.. I found a W111 in the junk yard and grabbed some bits from it... they can look very nice |
Carbs are the work of the devil. They just cause problems and waste gas and make lots of pollution. Buy something decent with your money. Get a LCD TV or a mutual fund.
