95 E420 - how many shift bushings?
'95 E420
shift lever is sloppy as all get out and it makes what I would describe as a metal-on-metal friction sound. and just recently it started to cause problems with not engaging gears. So without even looking I know the lever bushing are shot...if they're even there anymore...but anyways my question is how many different types of bushing's are there? Fastlane shows these two little guys, are there any others? I thought I read about upper bushings or something. http://img.eautopartscatalog.com/live/J407072864OES.JPG |
Pictures don't look right but I'm sure if you order them you'll get the right parts. There are two of them and they are the same.

I have replaced them on my car.
There are two. |
I have been there with shift bushing replacement. Check out this link

For the W124 there is only 1 type of bushing for the shifter...they do not look like the ones you posted but they will be the same as each other.
Pretty common for them to dry up and fall apart these days. |
They should be the same color as pictured but a slightly different shape so as to hold them in place on the levers.
|
so these are the ones I need? I wonder why fastlane only shows the incorrect ones for me. I can't be that crazy? So the ones I have, the smooth cylinders, what are those for?

I am not sure on the 95 cars but on the older cars there are 4 bushings for the shifter. The first ones shown are for the shifter itself and the second ones are on the linkage under the car. The ones under the car are usually the ones that go bad but I have seen the ones in the shifter go bad with the same symptons. If the shift lever can be twisted any at all then the problen can be inside. If you only have forward and backward play then it is probably the linkage bushings.

Yes, those last 2 pictured are the ones for the W124 that typically go bad. Still smooth bore and they look more like a large hard grommet to me. My few experiences with them its good to soak them in hot water to make them less hard to get on.

In fastlane I have to go back to like a 1993 400E to even get the part to come up. since it seems like its a universal W124 part I'll have to order from there. weird.

Looks like a problem with the parts data base - you might want to shoot Phil a note.
