1991 E300 4 Matic oil leak

My 91 4 matic m103 engine, 183k is consuming/ leaking 1 quart every 500 miles. there is freh oil on right rear of engine, just under the head gasket area. I have read about front oil leaks and head gasket failures on these engines. There is a little oil on garage floor but most seems to be leaking and burning there is a smell and alot of smoke coming off of the engine after highway driving. I am pretty sure that the head gasket is the problem. does anyone have any advice on gasket replacement or anywhere that I can pick up a MB repair manual to help me with the project?

definately check your valve cover gasket and replace it if even a little stiff or brittle.this is a low cost item and should be looked at first as a possible culprit

I was going through a quart in 350 miles on the CE. Changed the valve stem seals and valve cover gasket..no change

Changed the front timing horseshoe gasket and the oil level sender o-ring. Haven't lost a drop in 850 miles.

All oil seems to be below the head/block mating line but I will try your idea. It is alot cheaper and easier. Thanks.

I found that my engine also has an oil leak on the left side under the intake manifold, about where the cylinder #5 is. Nothing much so far, but I wonder where its coming from. It seems to originate in the area of the head gasket. A few weeks ago I replaced my valve cover gasket, so I don't think that is the problem. I'm hoping its not the head gasket.

Could you please report your results when available? Thanks.
