EGR Pipe '92 400E
 

Some one help! I can't pass smog because I need to clean out my EGR pipe... I know this is easy but I just need someone to walk me through it from beginning to end.

(I just had a mechanic tell me i needed to get a valve job to have this done!)

I know for the 6-cyl M104, the EGR tube resides behind the engine. And it's buried! Which is why you mechanic said what he did.

My indy had the head off on mine for a new gasket and didn't check the EGR when it was readily accessible. Later on, the car didn't pass smog because of the clogged tube. He cleaned it with a makeshift pipe cleaner with a long stem, but admitted it would have been far easier to do when you could actually get to the tube.

Cleaning the EGR tube was not that expensive. FWIW, when I asked him how he did it, he said he went thru the throttle body.

The car is a V8..not a 104.....

Where did this diagnosis come from - that you needed to clean your 119 motor EGR pipe to pass emissions? The EPC shows an "exhaust line" from the "intake manifold upper part to the intake manifold lower part" but I've never heard of such a thing getting clogged and causing a problem.

It pops up on this forum occasionally. I believe there is an updated part which resolves or mitigates the clogging issue.

I'd still question the diagnosis - pretty uncommon 119 problem.

The EGR pipe was blocked in my 420SEL, so I think it's more common than you think.

I've replaced two EGR valves over the life of the car, but never thought about the pipe itself getting clogged. It would be interesting to see how he got to it through the throttle body.

The cleaning thru the throttle body is on the in-line 6 ....

That's an entirely different motor, 116 motor has an entirely different setup, a long snaking EGR pipe more the 104.

I was asking more about the basis for the diagnosis - are you getting an EGR fault? has the EGR valve been tested? What information led to the diagnosis?
