'91 420SEL won't shift into reverse
My '91 420SEL will only shift into reverse when I first start the vehicle, i.e. when the engine is cold. When it warms up, reverse does not engage and the shift lever just kind of slops through the reverse position without much resistance. Even when it will shift into reverse, I have to rev the engine to get it to "catch," and it slips a lot, but it's enuf to get me out of the driveway anyway. The fluid level is full.
Any ideas?? Thanks |

I am going thru it, it is the same trans as in my 92 500 SEL, you probably did not notice the slight ticking in reverse. The trans can be rebuilt, the problem is the front clutches, the street price was in the $2,000 limited warranty. MB is twice that with a 2/24 warranty for less than $5,000 for a factory rebuilt. The labor seems to be 8hrs plus. I opted for the higher # strictly on the MB warranty wherever I am. I dont understand what the sift lever refernce was, mine clicks into place but still either hesitates or bangs into gear when you accellerate the engine over 1,000
It will get worse! Last edited by Peter Guenther; 03-19-2008 at 03:00 PM. |
