W126 Sway Bar Question?

My 1991 W126 with 196K miles which I have had since new has never had rear sway bar bushings replaced.

Today I noticed a loud clunk coming from the rear of the car when going around corners and the rear of the car actually seemed to unnaturally shift a little at the same time. is this likely a sway bar problem or something more serious?

Thank you.

The rear sway bar links are plastic.

Pull the rear wheels and look for a separated joint.

Jim,

It's a single one time clunk when I hear it. What kind of joint are you talking about? Seperated from what?

Thank you.

It depends on if your car has the 'anti squat geometry' or not.

The differece being is that the anti squat version uses a rubber bush connection, which in my experience doesn't fail as often as the standard suspension which uses the plastic link bars.

The anti-squat version uses a trailing arm made from cast aluminium, where the standard version uses a stamped steel version.

The difference in price is also large between the two types of link, the plastic ones being much cheaper, so make sure you order the correct ones.

Please also check the shock lower rubber bush, this is where is was clunking on my car.

Cheers,
Ben
