M103 front main...
Am I able to change this with the front cover still on the motor?
|
Yeah, just like an old Chevy - hard to get the old one pried out, but the new one just pushes in.

Yep, what he said :)

Ah, no specific tools? :D
Perhaps my oil consumption isn't as bad as I thought. |
Hit man...
Can you clarify a bit? I did valve stem seals...no noticeable improvement.. did upper cover and Horsheshoe gasket.. went from a quart in 350 miles to a quart in abouit 2200 miles. Still have a bit of oil dripping from somewhere on the CE... also did the 260E...it just leaks tranny fluid...ha-ha-ha. |

I resealed everything on that boy, stem seals, upper timing case, etc. No external leaks. :D And the trans was resealed right before I bought the the 300sel. Only thing I didn't do was the front main seal. And the seepage is quite obvious. |
yeah when they go, they pour.

Just use a pick and a plastic wedge to pry the old out?
|
03-3240 seems to be the PDF from the service book. :D

Hitman, my factory engine manual says to use a screwdriver to just pry the seal out, with a rag to protect the crank. there is an install tool 601589031400, but it's just a big washer/spacer that you put over the seal and screw on with the damper bolt. A little oil and some gentle pushing around the seal will do the same job.
If you are losing all the oil you mentioned above through that seal, it would make a pretty big mess under the car. A quart goes a very long way when it is dripping and running underneath the chassis. DG |
