89 190e center resonator removal?

My wifes 1989 190e 2.6 had its muffler fall out on a road trip a month ago. The muffler was fine but the center resonator is rusted out. We don't really want to fork out almost $500 for a new one. Is it wise to remove the center resonator and put a straight pipe in?

What are the problems with removing the center resonator?

And what does the center resonator do?

any help would be greatly appreciated. I am so glad I found this forum.

Resonator does just that.....remove noise.

W/O that part the exhaust will be somewhat louder.

I've got one that appears to be intact from a '91 190E 2.6. $100 + shipping.

Click on the "Buy Parts" tab at the top of this page.

Navigate to your year/model.

The part is $200... no shipping (on orders over $100) and no tax. It will be on your doorstep in 3-5 days.

You could do the straight pipe... it depends on your wife's threshold for the noise.

But in the end, you're just going to end up replacing it later on. So why not just do it now? It will be cheaper in the long run.

Just my 1.5 cents. (This weak American dollar is killin' me!)

I'm actually in process of removing the resonator on my 95' E320. The welds rusted completely out coming from the converter.
SO... I baought a new converter at 0'r eily's for $90 (I live in Wisconsin), a "Y" pipe to the muffler, and some straight pipe. I made sure to get some manafold spray paint as well for corrosion control.
Fingers crossed that it all fits nicely...
