I like MB's just because they are ment to be worked on, and if you do a lot of work on them yourself you appreciate it. Change the timing belt on a Toyota, or work on a V6 powered FWD car where you have to jack up the engine to change the back three plugs. Its like a vacation working on a MB after that.
The oil pan float should be pretty simple to change, it also is probably very cheap like $30. Again I am not that familer with the M119 but I find it hard to beleive that you have to drop the pan. Its probably stuck in the side of the pan with a clip and O ring, at least that would be my guess.
I havn't wrenched that much on the W140, but what I have done hasn't been any harder than on my W126. My favorite is the W210 its a fantastically great car to work on!
If it were my car I'd change the float on a Saturday and it would cost me all of $50 or whatever the float+ oil comes out to.
