420SEL Transmission

I checked my transmission fluid last week because I was feeling some slipping occasionally and jerking when I gave it gas around the corner. Well, nothing showed up on the dipstick. I've added three quarts since then and it still doesn't show up on the dipstick. I cannot believe the transmission could be this low and still work as well as it does. I'm just afraid that for some reason I will overfill the tranny. Does anyone know how many quarts from nothing showing up on the dipstick until it shows full on the dipstick? Thanks

The oil pan on the 722.3 trans only holds 3.6L of fluid.

So where could this fluid be going? There is slight seepage from the pan, but never any dripping, and it does not smoke. could it be going into the torque converter if it was low?

If you don't see fluid on the ground?? then thru the modulator.

And where from there?

E150GT, please let me know the final result of your investigation. I have the same car you do, and my tranny leaks a bit, too. I sure don't understand where all that fluid is going, either.

you have a vacuum line from the back of the intake manifold,on the pass side of centre, that goes down to the modulator valve on the left side of trans.it is a combination of metal and rubber/silicon line.if you remove from mod you will prob see trans fluid in it.the engine is sucking the fluid out of the trans and burning it.replace the mod valve and all will be well with the world.

Well double checked today. It's definitly smoking. I never noticed it though until I put it in neutral and gave it gas.

I have not verified this for myself, but a tech that replaced my modulator told me that he once saw a car with a bad modulator that smoked when it made right hand turns (the modulator being on the left side of the transmission).

I came across a link once on the 722.3 tranny that showed exploded views on top of the page with descriptions and MB part numbers listed below each view.
Like an idiot I didn't book mark the link. Anyone know whrere I can find this. It would be very helpful when ordering parts. Sometimes Phil, etal. gets confused.

TIA Dave
