Million Miles

I can not use my W210 M112 MBZ as any indication to the number of miles. I now only have 29K miles.

I have noticed that the badge of mileage honors are generally displayed with the diesel owners. In addition, they seem to have the “long in the tooth” ownership as far as distance driven over the years.

I have also gone to sites (limited though) such as ebay searching in interest the high mileage MBZ's and almost always the diesels pop up first. Note One 1996 gasser E320 with 299K miles, but it did note engine problems (valves).

Where are the high-high mileage gas MB’s? Is it expected that the gasoline models don’t or won’t last as long or is it just a perception thing? Will the gas 6 cyls hold up?

I become attached to my vehicles and like to keep them as long as possible (I gave my last auto non MB to my brother with 250K miles and a promise to have it pay me visits.

Is the diesel in this long life respect the way to go? (I do understand the cost for gas vs. diesel fuel change off). Is the gassers well maintained and cared for equal somewhat to the diesels engines life?

They say the gap between diesels and gassers got smaller as fuel injection came around. My MB gas motor probably has about 225k on it. My question is though, is it still considered a million miles if it has had an engine rebuild? Seems like cheating to me.

Keep in mind that the VAST majority of MB sedans sold in the US in the approximate time period from 1977-1985 were Diesels. This is the age of vehicle that can be expected to be reaching very high-mileage at this point.

With the US introduction of the gas 124 in late 1985, product mix changed.

Million Miles

Pete,

I suspect it was an Inline six (M103 ) it would be real interesting if it was the M102 4 banger. I would bet with (the taxi) there was little shut down (Cool down) and start ups with normal driving.

As mentioned above IRT cheating due to part replacement I guess you could consider that a little cheating but it still proves the longivity, everything wears out eventually. Irv Gordon's (sp) 65' P1800 Volvo which has 2+ million miles has done allot of cheating then.

I guess time will tell , even with gas prices climbing people will still be driving their autos. It will be interesting to watch and see how the gassers hold out longivity wise over the next decade. Thanks

Lee

Just got back from a tour through Europe,,, mostly France and Germany,,, but Mercedes are like Chevys over here,,, they are EVERYWHERE. They definately have the taxicab business sewed up, as it got to be unusual to see anything but a Benz as a taxi. Most were newer E classes and seemed to be well taken care of.

I noticed that when I went to Amsterdam, I only saw one taxi not Mercedes and it was a BMW.

Million Miles

Jay,

Now thats what I am talking about and its a gasser. Impressive. As said above due to the years MBZ Diesels dominated the MBZ market I would think that there are gas engines that are creeping into the high mile arena.
