It's been on the market for some time. The instructions scare me when they say to introduce AIR into the system before charging. That should not be necessary, and if it does help, it is only because your system is not designed for hydrocarbons. I'll stick with R134a.

EPA regulations carry the force of law. Note that it is against EPA regulations to replace R12 (or any other ozone-depleting refrigerant) with any hydrocarbon. So you really should not call this a "drop in" for R12.

I do commercial refrigeration work and Have been using a similar product to replace R12 for years. It is called Dura-cool.. I have had no problems with it at all. You only need 1/3 as much and the head pressures stay much lower than with R12.. Output air is much colder too.

I plan on playing w/ HC12 in some of my personal cars this summer...

No introduction of air into the system w/ HC12

That aside, Hydro carbons are very efficient refrigerants...and I Really don't like running 134a in systems that weren't designed for it...down here in Atlanta they Never work well.

I've used R406a. It's a non flammable propane based refrigerant. 25lbs cylinder costs about 200 dollars and it seems to keep the car pretty cool in my w108 while it lasted.

R406a is not propane based. It is mostly R-22. It does have about 4% hyrdocarbon content, but you can't get it to burn. And yes, it does work very well.

The envirosafe products are pure hyrdocarbon. Mostly a mix of propane and isobutane, I would guess.

Good stuff!

I started using this on all my cars a few years ago, and have been very pleased. It cools better than r-134a, and costs less. They also have a product called Proseal that will seal leaks in the metal parts of the system. Before I converted, I had a small leak "somewhere" that required me to top off the r-134a about once a week (no budget for a rebuild). After I put in the Proseal I haven't had to top it off in over a year.

Watch on ebay, once-in-awhile you'll real deals on the stuff.
