temperature gauge or a real problem?

The temperature gauge on my ’93 300E fluctuates between 90 degrees and 100 degrees. When I am on the highway, it is pretty steady at about 90 but will climb higher during start and stop traffic. It never goes into the red. I’m hoping that it’s that the gauges are incredibly accurate but am concerned that it is something $$ like the fans are not turning so the car needs to be moving to have air forced through the radiator. The last time I had a radiator replaced it was on a Plymouth van (can I say Plymouth in a Mercedes forum?) and it was $500 then. I have only had the car a few days.

That is probably a normal thing for your car. 100*C is only 212*F. Mine will do it too on a hot day. If the AC is not on, then any electric fans won't come on until the temp get way above 100*C. Clutches on the reg fan won't lock up until pretty hot, also.

Completely normal operating range for the M104 engine. The thermostat partially opens at 87c and is fully open at 102c. I have basically the same motor in my C280 and I experience the exact same thing. It was quite a shock to me when I first got the car as I was used to the standard "needle in the middle of the gauge until the car has already overheated" read out that you get with lesser cars. The gauge on the MB shows actual fluctuations in temperature.
