Can't find replacement o-ring for steering gearbox

This is for the steering gearbox on my 92 500SL.

It is leaking from an o-ring on the TOP of the gearbox.

According to my shop, this o-ring is NOT included in an overhaul kit for the gearbox. (Perhaps there are other sources for the kit...)

Looking up the part in the MB parts resource yields an incorrect size...

It appears to be about 28mm inside diameter with a thickness of 2mm.
The material would probably be Viton or Nitrile rubber.

Does anyone have a source for this, or can they provide the correct part number?

If you are confident of the size you oculd prob get one from McMaster Carr.

This is ringing a distant bell...

129 chassis, steering gearbox, unobtainable O-ring...

The part you are trying to seal isn't in any of the diagrams for the gearbox is it? They show a box just a little different than what you have?

I had one like this a year or so ago, if I recall. Tried everything under the sun to find an O-ring, all to no avail. Ended up with a new gearbox, as the customer was tired of not having a car.

I don't think this info is what you wanted to hear, but perhaps it can save you some of the headaches we went through.

I think you've about summed it up! They show a box that is a little different from the one I have...

I'm not quite certain enough to try McMaster-Carr, but they are a possible resource.

I have rounded up a few candidates from the assortments at some nearby parts houses and will take them to my shop tomorrow to see if any appear to be the right one.

Ok, for anyone else that encounters this problem:

Some of the early R129 cars have a steering gear box that does not exactly match any pictures in any documentation for the car.

The early cars have an o-ring seal that is not included in the gearbox re-seal kits available for the car.

The seal in question is the o-ring that seals the "cap" that is held in place by a snap-ring on the top of the steering box. This cap provides access to the nut on the top of the pitman shaft. I understand that on newer style steering sectors, this cap screws on...

After careful measurement, I purchased a suitable replacement at McMaster-Carr. They had them in stock for me to pick up at their will-call counter.

I used a Viton o-ring that is good from -40 to +400 degrees F.

McMaster-Carr's part number for a package of 10 is 9263K117

Specifications:

Standard Metric O-Ring
Cross-Section Shape: Round
Width: 2mm
Inside Diameter: 26mm
Outside Diameter: 30mm
Material: Viton

My shop installed it in my gearbox that was on their workbench while I watched. It seemed to be a nice fit. I don't anticipate having any problems with it.
