2 yr old synthetic oil
In one of my non-Mercedes, I have 2 yr old synthetic oil that has been in the car but hardly been used. would it still be good?

I recently changed to synthetic oil, so this stuff is fresh in my mind. The 2-year-old oil is OK, especially if you have put little mileage on it. The filter, however, should be changed.

good. thanks

Hmmm, that's kinda interesting.
We routinely change oil based on miles or hours of use; as it becomes contaminated with tiny metal shavings and combustion by-products which break down the oil and add acid, sludge, etc to it. We know not to store a car for long periods with used old oil, as it has acids and moisture that can attack a stagnant engine. But, if we are driving a car fairly routinely, but not a whole lot of miles (say 2000 per year) what would be the downside to changing the synthetic oil, say, every 3years or 6k miles? I drive my Corvette about 4K miles per year, and usually change the oil twice a year, at about 2k miles. But the car's oil-change computer is telling me I can go 12k miles! So, should I go at least a year on the Mobil 1 before changing it? (not that I probably will on my "baby", just curious). DG |
S-Class_Guru, the term "hardly been used" is assumed to mean that the car is being used, albeit rarely, and not in storage. If it's in storage, I agree w/you on the point of leaving oil in the engine.
Thanks for your imput to my fan switch question. It makes sense. |
