Ignition Tumbler 1990 300E

I removed the ignition tumbler in my 300E. Everything came out fine, but I was surprised that the tumbler was in two pieces when I removed it. The key slot, the part where your key enters the cylinder first, was separated from the rest of the tumbler. The tumbler seemed to work fine, and I was planning on its continued use. Does anyone know if the tumbler assembly is two pieces, or is mine somehow damaged yet working?
I don’t want to reinstall a faulty part in haste.
Thanks for your help.

I was having trouble with mine.... so i decided to replace it on the 260e

When the old one came out..it came out in two pieces. I figured that was the problem... since the new one went in in one piece..

i was really starting to have problems getting the key to turn if i removed it from the tumbler.

the last month...i left the key in the ignition until i got the new part from the dealer... 84 dollars with one key.

Why did you remove it in the first place?

Tumbler was 2 pieces in our w201. However, being a diesel, I don't know if its different from gassers.

Hi Lee,
The steering lock was sticking, so I neeeded to get at it.
Thanks for the help guys. Interesting the 201 was also in two pieces, so was mine, and so was Lee's; yet the new one comes in one piece. Kind of strange they'd all break that way, and mine turned OK.

When I changed mine, the new one was one piece and the old one came out in two pieces. You could see where the casting broke on the old one. I changed it out after finding it during a search for the cause of an intermittent SRS light.

There are plenty of nightmare stories of keys stuck in broken tumblers so it would be prudent to go ahead and get a new set from Mercedes. You can get a generic tumbler for less but then you'll have two different keys for the car.

You make a "V" shaped tool from coat hanger wire. If you have a new tumbler in front of you, you can see how the tool is inserted and how it depresses a spring clip near the base of the tumbler.
