99 E320 A/C Question

My 99 E320 started making noise every time I put the A/C on then it got worse to the point where putting on the A/C completely stalled the engine as if the compressor seize up. Has any one had this happen? Is it possible to repair a compressor or does it have to be replaces. Is it an expensive repair

Thanks

Engine off, key to pos 2, turn ac on and set to AUTO and 72f, within 20 secs adjust left side to HI and right to LOW, press and hold REST and EC for 5 secs. If the 20 secs expires cycle key and sart over from where you were interrupted. RECIR will light and first code will appear on CCU (ie Eb....1234). Toggle through codes using L/R auto buttons and post.

2nd - engine on and warmed up, ac on auto 72f, press and hold REST for 5 secs. Post actual values screens 1-8. Toggle screens using auto buttons.

I didnt dare turn the AC on when running for fear that it would break the belt then I wont be able to drive

Thanks

B1234 = Sun sensor (increases fan speed), most of us report that fault.
B1459 = Electromagnetic Clutch at compressor. May be siezed. Can be replaced. More diagnostics needed.

can just the clutch be replaced with out replacing the whole compressor

Can you rotate the compressor shaft by hand?

Jaackil 06-10-2008 12:50 PM

Havent tried

If the system has not been run for several hours, the compressor shaft should turn easily and smoothly by hand.

Jaackil 06-10-2008 01:22 PM

The system hasnt been run in over a week. The Shaft will turn a little, maybe 1/4 to 1/3 turn but it is not turning smooth and easy

You should be able to easily rotate it a dozen revolutions by hand. Clockwise from the front, of course. That you cannot suggests a failed compressor.
