Citric Acid flush

I know this topic has been talked about before so please don't tell me to search. I think I need to flush the cooling system due the car running on the warmer side of normal(about 100-105 in traffic). I have a question though. Do ya'll think that flushing the system with citric acid will cause the headgasket to leak or sonething else to leak? Thanks

Doing a flush should not cause any good part to fail. That being said, on my 300SD doing a flush brought out a leaky radiator that had plugged itself with gunk.

Well my rad isn't leaky, AFAIK. I just hope the headgasket doesn't start to leak, but I guess its a chance you have to take. Its either you flush and it leaks or the car continues to heat up and it wears out the motor.

Just make sure you thoroughly flush out the citric acid before you fill up with antifreeze. I've read that some people even use a flush with baking soda to help neutralize the acid and then do a few more flushes with just water before filling up with antifreeze.

I don't think so, but I'm also not willing to be responsible for your car if it does. If a good cleaning makes it leak, then IMO it would just be a matter of time until it would have leaked anyway.

Someone deleted my thread in the other section. Wonder who it was, and why they did?

My old 96 S600 was running hot and finally I removed the front fans and the AC condenser and it was badly clogged between the Condenser and the radiator.. Cleaned it out with soap and water and it fixed it!

the Keep It Simple Solution

Like the guy said make sure you wash away or flush the cleaning solution. Fluids are not ment to penetrate gasgets.
If you put your hand in orange juice you would wash your hands before touching any sensitive part.
Citric acid or flushing agent needs to be neutralised before normal conditions are returned. Sodium Bicarbonate is an alkaline base which will equalize or lower acidic conditions.
If my motor was overheating due to clogged water passages I would use a purpose made flushing agent, follow their directions and get it right.
If it does not work the company whose produce it was may come to your aid, cause they might like to see what resisted their product. Or you have a different problem.
Tony

I would think you may want to take a closer look at the rest of the system prior to doing the flush. I'd start with pulling the main hoses and thermostat and looking for evidence of build-up. The flush may or may not help cooling, but you should start with the basics before flushing the system .

Good Luck,
Todd

Do any of you have info regarding the use of citric acid to flush the crud out of a radiator & cooling system? If so, what amount of citric acid powder or crystals would you recommend for adding to the cooling system to perform a flush? I have a '93 MB 500 SEL that I wish to replace the cooling fluid, but also want to flush it out at same time.

Thanks in advance.

Jon

I think this is the most recent thread about citric acid flush.
Does anyone know where to buy citric acid in Los Angeles?

I don't know where specifically near you, but I bought the 2.2 lbs. I needed at a home brew supply store that sold home wine making supplies. The citric acid is used to correct acidity levels in wines.
