1986 300E transmition filter change

Changed the tranny fluid and filter yesterday, and all went well except the new gasket did not fit. The filter fit just fine but the gasket was the wrong one, so I just used the old one. The gaskets are such good ones that it should be ok, so far no leaks. Is there different trannys for the 1986 300E? It is ok to use the old gasket?

no problem using the old gasket....

they don't seem to harden up on the transmission.

i have 3 124's.... replaced the gasket on one...because i bought it... but the old one was just fine...

i think the most important thing is to not over-torque the bolts.

did you use mobil 1 or mercon V?

I used Valvoline DEX/MERC, that is ok, right?

I've used plain Quaker State Dex/Mec in my previous W124. It was fine. You should have no problems with your choice of fluids. Its MB-spec.

did they drain the torque converter when they replaced the filter?? that is a good idea- old fluid burnt needs to go.

No, the fluid looked pretty clean. So I just drained the pan and changed the filter. The p.o. said he had alot of work just done to the car. It looks like the tranny fluid was changed not to long ago.

fluid choice is fine... i just use mobil 1 since it stays in there for 30k miles..

next time drain the torque converter, too... about 2-3 quarts come out of there

I used Mobil 1 on my W124 as well. Drained the TC too...

When you have the car up on ramps, how do you get the torque drain to line up?

lee polowczuk 06-16-2008 06:30 PM

i don't put the car up on ramps, i use jacks..and i just jack it up enough to slide under there.

i use a larger flat head screwdriver to turn the torgue converter until the plug comes into play.
