You may have two leaks. The one above the alternator could be the timing cover seal strip (see picture) costing about $3-4. The leak you show from the top could simply be your oil filler cap (perhaps gasket gone). An MB service advisor once told me to wipe down the cap gasket and mounting surface each time before reisntalling cap to extend life of cap gasket.

The timing cover seal strip, is that a hard job?

It's fairly easy but you do need a new camshaft distributor drive seal and some MB sealant, Loctite 5900 from MB. Lube the U shaped seal with oil so the aluminum cover will slide over it and seal the corners and where the cover buts up against the head.

Not too bad, I recall it took me about 4 hours. Just take your time and you'll be fine. Also, I degreased my engine beforehand which made the job much more pleasant.

i degreased, too..

however i think it only took 2 hours...and most jobs usually take me a longer time.

Do you get most of your car parts here on this site? Or someplace else?

lee polowczuk 06-16-2008 07:04 PM

i have used this site occasionally..but it is hard to beat the prices at ***************
