I am a girl, need help, 1986 560sl won't start, tries hard.
okay, driving down road and it just stops, running perfectly before it stopped. Turns over but won't start. Ordered new fule pump relay after reading posts. Installed it and still Do not hear the fuel pump start and I used to be able to. A side note, at the same time now my window motor won't work and dash lights are out. checked fuses, they seem okay to me.
Now, one more thing, I am a girl and this is my husband car, I bought it for him 2 years ago and I am pretty sure he loves his 560 more than me. One more question, is it possible to put the relay in the wrong way? There are 9 pins on the front and 4 pins in the back. Thanks for trying to help me. |

car just died on road, turns over great just won't start. doesn't appear to be getting fuel. bought new fuel pump relay, installed it. stil won't start. I do not hear pump come on, and I used to be able to. On a side note, also windows will not roll up now, weird. checked fuses, seem okay. |

If you checked the fuses visually only, you can easily miss a hairline crack due to age. If you pull out a fuse, and it has such a crack, the element will fall apart.

nah no way to put in a relay wrong. If your fuel pump relay was faulty the fuelpump wouldnt work at all. Get somone to stand at the rear of the car and put their hand on the fuel pump when you turn toe key to the on position. The fuel pump is located right behind the right rear wheel axle, if its buzzing or you feel vibration, its energized (Make sure its the fuel pump and not the filter located above). . .

Since you are a girl, why not ask your big strong husband to get it fixed. As for the other issue, have you considered counseling?

I know it's a completely different chassis, but I had a similar problem with my '95 E320. It ended up being an OVP relay. Your car has one as well. Not sure if they are as problematic on your chassis...
Your looks like this... http://www.***************/secure/PartImages/2015400845.jpg I think your car has 2 fuel pumps, which almost makes me want to bet that both are not dead at one time... Sounds like an electrical/ relay type thing to me... -GH

fuel pump relay or pump, I am a girl!!!
Okay, tonight I will try to see if I feel any vibration coming from fuel pump.
By the way, you are some funny guys. No we have not tried counseling, why waste money on counseling, he loves the car, I do too. will recheck fuses too since it seems too coincidental that both things happened at once. My big strong husband gets mad when he can't figure stuff out and causes more problems when he tries so I let him alone and only call him when I have too. He gets too frustrated. so, I hope you guys help me figure this out because the Dealers take all my money. |

While there is no doubting the "power of coincidence" . . . the mutliple electrical problems could also indicate a failed or failing electrical ground, which might also knock out engine circuits and interior items, especially since the window and dash lights are likely on separate circuits.

Have you considered the fact that she may be entirely happy doing the work? Maybe he cooks and cleans house while she works on cars. I would rather be working on my cars than...hold on. My wife is calling, I have to go and clean the house.
But seriously, one of my daughters can do all the maintenance work on her mountain bike. I taught her to do things, just in case she is stranded someplace far away from daddy. Her b/f, on the other hand, does not even know how to raise the seat on his bike. Gentlemen, it is a new era!

girl 560sl fuel pump relay
okay, the fuel pump does nothing, does not feel as if any current is getting to it, also must mention dash lights are out also. Can I take out the fuel pump relay and try to start it without it? Could swear someone said you can do that, or jumper pins, but honestly how could you jumper pins, that relay is in a dark hole behind glove box.
broken ground sounds logical to me. What if an item, a box was shoved too tightly in the front seat and pushed into the fuse box, which was a day before all this happened, coincidence? |

plot thickens, when I put in the fuel relay, the black box for the radio p/n 126 820 08 26 is sitting there totally disconnected, as is the windshield wiper pump. There is an aftermarket radio if this car, a piece of junk. All the connectors (think 3) are just hanging there, wires going to washer motor go through the firewall (?) going towards engine and they also are just sitting there disconnected. But let me say, this has been this way since we purchased it over a year ago with no problems. May be totally unrelated. And...under the dash there is melted plastic, looks old not new, near the ignition switch. My husband thinks it all goes back to the radio. not sure why. he thinks he smelled burning plastic by the ignition switch right before it died....makes it all so complicated this new info.

electricity is not something you can see or smell. Diagnosing this car is going to require a multimeter and somebody that knows how to use it.
If that's not you and not your husband, draft somebody else. I am a big believer in treating a car like a puzzle and figuring out what's wrong. It's easy to do as you learn the basics. A good meter is about 25$ at sears and will cover volts, ohms and amps. Splurge on one that can read RPM if you like. Anybody have a "meters 101" web page to go to? -CTH |
