por15 advice

I want to paint my utility trailer frame so it looks good. Which por15 product or products would be recommended. I want to be able to do minimal prep work and use a small roller to apply the product(s).

Thanks

Tom W

http://www.por15.com/

I'd use the marine clean, then the metal prep, 2 coats of rust preventative paint and finally 2 coats of black chassis top coat.

If you want to use a roller, make sure it's a foam roller so as to minimize air bubbles. A felt/nap paint roller will turn the paint into foam which will compromise the protection and require additional coats once dried.

EDIT: Don't skimp on ventilation either. I used POR-15 on my floor boards and didn't use a fan to vent the interior. I ended up with a POUNDING headache for several hours afterward. I thought being outdoors with a breeze and a respirator would be sufficient ... wrong.

Hi, I've sucessfully used POR-15 on a number of my projects and have never been disappointed. Generally I use the POR-15 gloss black and then use a standard auto laquer over the top (after appropriate scuffing & priming). The beauty of POR (Paint Over Rust) is that it does just that, in fact the presence of some rust actually assists the product to bind with the metal! I've even painted an old set of (rusty) chromed trailer rims with it and never seen any return of the rust! Your local POR supplier should be able to supply you with a catalogue of all their products and their applications, if not go to the POR website (www.por15.com)

I am also a fan of POR-15 products but have found Rust-Oleum Hammered to be a very good product at much less cost. Several colors are stocked at our local Lowe's and Home Depot. I painted a utility trailer with this a year ago and have been impressed with the way it has held up. This is not your typical Rust-Oleum product with the slow drying time. I believe that it is the same product that I purchased years ago that was called Hammertite or some such name. I have only used the brush on variety but they also have it in spray cans.

I like the product and have used it on vehicles, but the black does not do well in the sun, it turns greyish when exposed to sunlight.

It's supposed to be top-coated when exposed to sunlight.

Chad's advice is spot on b/c i tried to just put POR15 and several days later by accident, i chipped some areas off and the rust was still there.

Go buy their prep products and *then* apply the POR15 and finish w/ a top coat

Which prep product are you referring to?

The Marine Clean product is really just a degreaser. I don't think it's essential to use that product specifically.

The Metal Ready is a rust neutralizer and it dries with a zinc phosphate coating that helps the rust preventative paint adhere. I wouldn't expect the rust to stay gone without using it.

Do you know if the Metal Ready is part of the kit for brakes? I'm guessing it is, but haven't ordered any yet. I have to find somewhere flat to park the car and jack it up before I can do that.

The Caliper Kit comes with something they call "Caliper Cleaner". I doubt it has Metal Ready in it. I imagine it is just a strong degreaser that will break down brake dust too.

If your calipers are rusty, I'd get a bottle of the Metal Ready as well.

They probably are and I will. Thanks, Chad. I'll also make sure that I do it outdoors.
