Front bearings

89 300TE notice a lot of grease in a star pattern on the wheel, is the bearing leaking? No noise, no shimmy. Do I need a special tool to pull the bearing cap??
Thanks, kchemers

The cap may be slightly ajar allowing grease out. The seal is at the rear of the hub. If this were bad, the grease would appear on the back side of the wheel. No special tools needed to remove the cap. When replacing the cap, make sure it is filled w/grease up to the lip.

What is the recommended front wheel bearing grease. My 240d had some red grease on them when I pulled the hub.

I had a similar prob. with my 88 300. Even after I replaced the seals, I got a small amount of residue around the center or the wheel. Just be careful not to over tighten the bearing retaining nut when you reassemble. Tignten gradually until you get no play in the wheel, then back off one space on the retaining cup that fits over the nut, check for play again, if OK put in the cotter pin.

You can't go by color when identifying grease. Although Mobil 1 synthetic is a red grease, easily available, and is an excellent choice for wheel bearings, including your model.

I got some Lucas red lithium with "polymers" EP grease.
