1987 300E , Brake Problems? master cylinder or brake calipers?

Hey all, I need some input, ive been working on the brakes for a while now. second set of brake pads replaced in 2 months. Its just bad now, i dont drive it, my wife drives the car just to and from work.

The Problem is the brakes is always clamped on while driving, almost dont even have to step on the brakes if approaching a stop light.

At first, i thought ok it was the abs sensor, or i didnt bleed the brakes right after doing the brake job.

Dont know if the master cylinder is bad or the calipers.

Any input would happily appreciated, Thanks.

If they are all dragging it could be a M/C. When you replaced the pads did the pistons move back freely? If only 1 or 2 calipers are dragging it's likely a bad rubber brake hose swelled shut.

Yeah, it was pretty tough to push back the pistons.

So does it just seems like the m/c or both? yeah i hope its the brake hose, i really dont want to put too much money in this car.

Thanks for your reply.

Simple Brake diagnostic tricks:

Press the brake pedal down very hard and then release.
Now, jack each wheel and see if they spin by hand.
The one/s that don't , open the bleeder and see if the wheel then spins.
If yes , then the hose is suspect on that wheel. If NO, then the caliper is stuck.
If all wheels are stuck , then either all hoses are constricted [possible/not probable], then the suspect is the M/S.

You can also isolate it if you go for a short ride and then feel the heat on each wheel ..the hot one/s is the dragging one/s.

Also check both rear for possible mal-adjusted or stuck emergency brake/cable.......

1987 300E Brake Probs

I would start with the calipers. They are probably sticking. If so, rebuild them.

This is the proper way to Diagnose it. Guessing and throwing parts at it is just a waste of time and money. It could simply be a matter of dirty calipers that are not letting the pads back off the rotors. It could also be an issue of someone that drives with 2 feet and is dragging the drakes by resting thier foot on the brake pedal. Are all the pads wearing evenly or is one pad out of four wearing out? You have to do a little detective work and see what the pads and rotors are telling you. Also with that short of mileage/time (you don't mention how many miles) I would look for heat cracks in the rotors as well and if so replace them. Another common issue with MB brakes is thin rotors with a high ridge that cuts into the sensors and puts the break pad light on when there is still 50%+ pad life left.
Hope this info is helpful.
