Belt tensioner
My repair shop wants to replace my "old style" belt tensioner with the "new style" (automatic?) for around $600. The old one currently works fine. I have a 1999 E320 Wagon with 4-matic, 87K miles.
Should I do it? |
The new tensioner is an updated part and is better. Typically we only install the updated tensioner when there is a problem in the belt drive. If there's no reason to have the belt off, I'd leave it alone until such time arises.

Technology issues aside, why would you want to spend $600 to replace a part that isn't broken? Belt tensioners are easy enough to replace, so run the one you have until it actually *needs* to be replaced.
