M110 AC Compressors
 

I have noticed that some 280SLs & Euro 280Es use a compressor that looks like a Sanden. Is this a Sanden or something else? I would like to replace the York in my 280E with a Sanden for use w/R12.

I don't think MB ever installed Sandens, they progressed from Yorks to Nippondensos on later M110. Sandens and a very similar Zexel compressor made an excellent upgrade with less vibration and better belt life. Need a bracket like this:

Thanks, Steve. Does this bracket mount to the existing York bracket, or directly to the M110 engine - replacing the York bracket?

It mounts to the existing bracket.

BTW I prefer the Zexel/Seltec compressor.

Hello Steve! Doc and I say hello! On the compressor question, I have a 1985 280SE with manual 4-speed that has this compressor. From what I can tell, the car has a Mercedes Benz dealer installed a/c unit. The condensor, lines, condensor fan, dryer and evaporator case is totally different from my other 126 chassis car. The bracket on the side of the engine is actually stamped with a MB part number. If time permits, I will go out today and take some pics of the setup and post them. You can tell that this car left the factory without a/c because holes had to be cut through the firewalls to run the lines. BTW Steve, Doc really liked this Euro spec car of mine... said it was "simplicity at its finest". The dryer for the system is mounted at the condensor rather than in the left fender well. The control relays for the compressor and condensor fan are located on the right hand shock tower. Hope this helps some... will get some pics.

We imported a number of M110 126 cars in 1984 and 1985. One we ordered to our specs new and was a 1985. It came with a nippondenso compressor. One or two that we imported came without A/C and we had kits installed before they left Germany. I think these had a york and sanden comps.

The Sanden and the Seltec use the same bracket. The Seltecs are all o-ring fittings. The sandens can be o-ring or flare. I like the Seltec because the fittings come out parallel rather than in a "V" as the sanden does, purely astetic. Both are good low vibration units. WP has the Seltecs.

All of the installs we had done in europe had MB evaporators and cases. They of course had teh manual controls. I have seen some terrible hang ons where the evap was crammed into a heater only case. Poor cooling and airflow were the unrepairable consequenses.
