2002 C230K noise after key insertion/removal
 

The above car made a "bzzzzt" sound when the key was inserted or removed in the ignition. This past weekend it started to make a "gear grinding" type of sound. The car starts fine, just the strange sound when the key is inserted or removed. Is there anything mechanical in the ignition switch that would cause this noise? Thanks.

Most likely the motor drive in the steering lock.

You want that replaced before it leaves you stranded.

Thank you. Is the noise the only sign of it going bad (until it does not unlock the steering wheel)? Will the dealer replace if the noise is the only symptom? I have the MB extended warranty. Again, thanks.
