Question 88 300e fuel distrutor install

Hi my name is Richie. I have just recently purched a really nice 88 mercedes that is a 1988 with only 89k on it. I am have a problem when in gear the motor shake back and forth. I took it to the Mercedes dealer hjere in NY. They told me I need a fuel distributor, the #6 cyl. is have a problem. I want to purchase a used one and install it. My friend told me to be careful because there is a gear under the distributor and you have to line it up. If you dont ythe fuel will not be sent at the right time. Does anyone know about this or maybe have some directions on how to change this item. Thank you for reading my question.
