How much($) to rebuild the 4.2 l 400e motor

i want to restore my old benz...its starting to get lazy in acceleration and not as quiet any more.

its a 92 400e with about 220 thou Km on it. The tranny is getting soft as well.

So what ya think,,, worth the time and trouble? And how much ?? for repairs.

also if i leave the car still for a few days when it starts up it is really

rough...running and sounding till the oil circulates through the block, then it

seems to calm down.

It really all depends on how bad your engine is have you checked compression in the cylinders? oil pressure? it may just need a simple rering and oil pump, or could need the whole thing rebuilt that will be the starting point for your build but worse case I would guess 5-6000$, but somethings to consider in the mean time.

1. what sort of shape is the body/interior? good, great, okay?
2. who will do the engine work, you/the shop?
3. how much do you love this car, is this something you will keep forever? or will you get tired of it? and remember no matter how new the engine/transmission is the rest of the car will still have 220K on it.
4. some advice find a reputable place that specializes in MB transmissions/engines, these things are not for the amatuer to get into.
5. start pricing parts, then you will know what a fair price is for everything.

Sadly rebuilding a 119 motor is not an economically viable proposition these days. But you should get the condition of the engine assesed by a professional. At 136k miles you shouldn't be anywhere near needing an engine rebuild, top or bottom end.

I concur, 136k miles is not alot of miles at all - the M119 is pretty much built like a brick outhouse (unlike the insulation on the wiring harnesses...it was made out of play-doh and spit*)

That transmission however.....From what I have seen, a lot of them do not seem to make it much past 200k.

*1992 had good insulation
