Thumbs up how to remove valve cover

i.. am planning on taking the valve cover off today and i was wondering if there is a special procedure to it, like removing the spark plug wires or something on a 1993 mercedes 300se straight 6 cyl im thinking the dealer might charge to much thanks for the help.

is there any reasoning behind taking it off....???? Are you replacing the gasket or do you just want to see what the camshafts look like?

The VC gasket set can be a pain to replace, the areas need to be completly free of oil for the vc gasket to stay in place for reinstallation.

Sylvester, yes ... remove all the ignition wires. The distributor cap terminals are marked with the respective cylinder number, and (as you probably know) the cylinders are 1 thru 6, front to back. While you're replacing the valve cover gasket it's an ideal time to replace the distributor cap, distributor rotor, spark plugs and ignition wires.

You need a 10 mm bit and a medium length extension bar is handy especially for the bolt on the passenger side rear. The transmission tube is right in the way. When you reinstall the vc, I believe the torque is 8.5 Nm.

They can be stuck on there pretty good, use a mallet not a hammer, or try prying at the edge of it.

Ditto on the mallet - the one I removed from a car in the junk yard required quite a bit of whacking to get it loose.

By the way, the camshaft is pretty cool to look at.
