Cause of black smoke?

'84 SEC has been running like a dream. But today.......
Got off the freeway and at the light the car almost died. Idle fell below 500. Stood on the gas to keep it going while waiting for the green light.

Of course economy guage was all over the dial with the RPM dancing around. But in my driveway with pressure on the gas I noticed as much blake smoke from the exhaust as you would see on a Greyhound bus. ???

No EGR on this 500 engine. Does have the California emmissions. Did I burn through another oxygen sensor? All vac lines look good.
Close to 100 degrees outside. So I will take closer look when cooled down.

Any ideers??

The fuel prob I understand. I started the car this morning and all is well. So it's a something failing due to heat. I have OVP, ignition module, and fuel pump relay to change out.

Think I will do one at a time. Do not know testing the old part routine with the meter yet. But I will get through this an keep you guys posted.

Changed OVP. No improvement. Changed fuel pump relay. Idle came back even and steady. No smoke. Getting dark, so tomorrow I will give it the real test on the road and in the heat.
