'88 300e runs rough
My car has been running really rough at low speeds and sometimes will even flat out stop at a stop sign or something. I have replaced the Distributor cap a while back because the shop would not trouble shoot my car because it needed a bunch of little stuff done, so I did it.
It is almost like it is misfiring. I checked all plugs and they look nice and clean. I would appreciate any directions I could be pointed in to figure this out. Are there any error codes that can be obtained from this year/model ? |
I would start with the really simple/cheap stuff first. Have you inspected the vacuum lines? I just replaced all mine for about $8.00 and a half an hour of my time. Smoothed it right out, should have done it a year ago when I got the car.
Does your car have the Diagnostic Module with the LED and push button up by the battery? |
Try: 1. Fuel Filter 2. Check Air Filter 3. CPS (Crankshaft Position Sensor) 4. Coil 5. Spark Plug Wires (Start car at nite...Open Hood-look for firework party) 6. Air Fuel Adjustment (Mine took a 1/4 turn and corrected this issue) 7. Fuel Pump Pressure/Fuel Pump itself..How many true miles? P.S. Do not let anyone except someone who "really" knows this car under the hood. You will be glad you did...good luck...post what the problem was when you find out!

If you search on the forum, there are a couple posts that detail a way to read the error codes w/ a home-made code reader (and how to make the code reader).
Also, as was mentioned before, I want to stress the importance of the coil pack, especially if you are running the original. There is no way to test the coil, apart from replacing it. If you plan on keeping the car, you mind as well replace the coil, as they don't last forever. In my case, the coil was the main issue and calmed the roughness down a lot. |
Thanks for the suggestions. I will try some of those out and get back to you.
