1989 300e

So, my 1989 300E has been having that 'stall at stop lights' problem that seems to be the bane of several other people's existence. Additionally, I noticed that in neutral, the economy meter reads zero even under throttle (I'm assuming it's a vacuum leak). Others noted that these symptoms may point to a bad OVP relay, so yesterday I ordered a new one.

Unfortunately, this morning when I went to start my car, I turned the ignition and it cranked without starting. I tried again for several more seconds and then it made a loud noise along with a bit of a shake. I doubt this is the OVP now. Considering the noise and shake, I do not want to damage the engine by trying to start the car in this state.

With the stalling and now the starter problems, does anyone have any suggestions as to what the problem(s) may be?

There could be a lot of things going on, but one thing to check is if the fuel pump is going when you're trying to start the car. There should be a buzz from the right rear of the car for about a second when you turn the key to the "on" position. If it's not, the fuel pump relay could be at fault.

solved a very similr problem on my 190E 2.6

here is what I checked:

1. Fuses
2. Vacuum lines anything obivous
3. Fuel pumps
4. CIS_E system and made sure all parts met specifications
5. Wiring harness and made all the parts were getting signals from the computer to the devices
6. Sensors
7. Added techron
8. closely inspected my fuel lines and hoses at the fuel pumps, found leaks and replaced eveyrthing
9. Checked my in tank screen
10. Replaced ovp
11. Check sparked plugs, saw that they were black. I was running rich.
12. Checked the diagnostic port for codes.

The problem didnt go away until I replaced all hoses at fuel pump. I did this after I done all of the other things. While I was at it i adjusted the lambda and the car runs great now.
