All AC fans work when they want to...then none do...?

1991 300E MBZ

Had my freon (the new legal stuff) filled...hit the HWY at 70MPH+ and hit the fan buttons very quickly as i chose the level. EVERY fan button went dead as did all fans.
Stopped car...shut off engine...got back in they worked perfectly.
Yesterday they worked again...today no!!
Any thoughts?
Thanks for this help......

Chexck fuse at drivers side strut tower for hairline crack............

Francis X. 09-05-2008 05:06 PM

Arthur,
Went there..small black box on top of strut...opened box...place for two fuses...only one white fuse there?
Now I had my aka-freon refilled JUST before this all happened...would they have removed a fuse. Why/ maybe never a fuse there??
Do i need two fuses?
Plot thickens.
Do i put in another white fuse and start 'er up?

I think you are in the wrong spot, go down alittle more and to your right and that is the one for your blower. It should be a flat metal fuse.I think the one that you are at is for heated seats and I forgot what the other one is for. Dont put a fuse in the empty spot.

AC Blower doesn't work

Arthur,
With your direction I located a black (rubber enclosed) fuse attached to the side of the box supporting the fusebox (the tower?). It is a small space so I opted to FIRST jiggle/shake the connection rather than try to disengage it and have to figure out a way to e-attach it.
I jiggled and shook it and turned the key and it works.
In the two weeks prior to the problem...on two occassions I drove through parts of California in 100+ degrees for hours....106 in Bakersfield and 111 in San Raphael. You know there was much expansion and contraction when you add the heat of this engine...at 134,000 miles on the odometer.
So tomorrow brings another story or I drive off into the sunset THANKING you!

1991 300E climate control fan

Arthur, Still not working 100%!
It works sometime and when it does it works 100%..cold cold air...can switch from high and low fans..heat.....etc.
But somedays nothing but the cold air that seeps through without benefit of fan.
I don't know if I was savvy enough to get to the fuse you directed me to.
Is there anyway i can send a picture?
Also getting down into the space to get to the fuse is a hand scraper..I have to push to get to the fuse and never was successful in getting to it.
Guess i have to open my wallet and go to a shop.
If only this industry wasn't so ridden with scam artist....
Thanks for your help.
Frank

What are you talking about ..if the fuse was any more visable , it would bite you.

Here is one ..look at the location...and the guy replaced it with an in-line fuse.

Arthur you are absolutely RIGHT

I slowed down...looked the situation over...there it was.
Mission accomplished.
