94 E320 wagon - A/C Works...but only sometimes

Hello!

Thank you in advance to anyone that can help me. I have to take carpool to school, and it is HOT here in Florida.

I have a 1994 E320 wagon. The air worked great about 2 months ago. Then it started to get sporadic. When the unit is on, I can always hear the compressor come on, and the air is cold when I put my hand to the vents. But the blower only comes on occasionally.
When I'm on the highway, I can vent my sunroof and it pulls out the cold air, and it's cooler in the car.
It came on yesterday on the way to school, and I froze the kids out, because I didn't want to shut it off. But, of course, when I shut the car off and turned it back on it wasn't working. The buttons for fan speed stick occasionally, and sometimes when the air was working fine the high speed wouldn't work, until I fiddled with it.
I am pretty handy, and good at following direction, so any help you can give me would be great!! I have a friend that's in the radiator business, and he has a lot of tools, etc. He's not really an all around mechanic, but he too is good at following direction, so he might be able to help me.
Thanks so much for reading this, and hopefully someone can help.

It sounds like your blower motor might be failing. Do a search for blower motor, there should be a fair amount of information on this.

Blower motor or blower regulator. They are accessible after removing the wiper system from the engine compartment. The regulator is beneath the motor.

The other thing to look at is the fuse. It often cracks and can work intermittantly but I doubt it would cause a control problem. Anyway the regulator controls the ground side of the blower so to test one must expose the blower wires and jump the ground side.
