Help with the differential

hey guys, i accidentally drained the fluid for the front diff. of a 2004 ML350. i drove it for about 50 miles, and it started making a horrible grinding noise, and that it just suddenly stopped, and it continued to do this even after shifting into neutral and trying to tow it with another car. what i want to kno is, a) what could the problem be, and b) how to solve it

thanks a ton

Am I missing something here? If you drained the fluid, I would think that is the problem.

A; You fried the diff. It's shot

B; You will have to replace the diff, or get it rebuilt if you can find someone to do it. Normally it's easier to find rebuilt diffs on older models, I'm not sure anyone will be rebuilding them for 2004's yet. You're probably stuck buying new.
