I recently took the rear seat out of my '86 300E to vacuum the car out. I was lifting the foam to see if there was any junk under it and I noticed that there was a disconnected wire under the seat. The wire goes to a cylindrical box that measures about 6 inches in diameter and it's about 5 inches tall. It has 3 copper wires coming out of it that connect to the harness. What is this device and what does it do? Is it ok that the wires were disconnected?

Yes, it is white. Your diagnosis sounds right because there is only that one wire going into it and it's not connected to anything else except for the frame. Thanks a lot for your help in ID'ing it!
