rubber seals around windshield

the rubber seals around the windshield and rear glass on the 300DT (1984) are looking pretty bad. also there is a water leak in the rear glass right under the lower trim piece due to rust. I'm thinking of getting the water leak repaired and the window seals replaced. anyone have any experience with the following:

I had my rear gasket replaced on my 85 300d. I removed the glass and rubber. had rust starting, so used paint stripper and cleaned the whole lower section out down to metal.

I uses POR products. used the metal ready, soaked rags in it and let it do it`s work. then preped as per instructions and used their paint. it is some tough stuff.
also used some thin fiberglass pieces soaked in the POR to cover up the flange area to seal it from moisture. and to cover and seal the rust areas good.
they also have Por Past. it is the paint in a paste form. I used it with a acid brush to make sure things were sealed good.

called a mobile glass guy, cost $150.00 just to install. I had the new gasket and had the glass clean for him.
he installed it dry, saying MB does it this way. had more water in the trunk when it rained the next night.
so bought a caulking tube of 3-m urathane sealant and ran a bead from the top edge down the sides to the bottom under the ege of the rubber. hasn`t leaked since.

notice one of the places you list has been installing glass for over a 100 yrs. must be some pretty old guys:rolleyes:. that doesn`t always mean the installer has as much experience. they just want to hit it and get it and be gone.

you pull the glass out, you see what you have. drop it off and pick up later on you don`t know what was under there. they just remove and replace. unless you have it removed by them, and then do the clean up and bring back for install.

I like to watch what is going on if I can.

now that iam a Bum (Retired) I have plenty of time :D
