Timing cover gasket dilemma and a hissing noise. 97 E320 M104.
My head sits .075"(1.9mm) higher thanks to a gasket spacer I used to lower compression. The timing cover seal is too thin and oil flows out of the passenger side corner moderately. How should I go about solving this problem? I was thinking of building up the gasket with ultra black RTV, letting it dry, then putting an thin wet layer over top and in the necessary spots.
The car now makes a loud hissing noise under the front half of the intake. It is kind of audible inside of the car if you listen for it at idle. The car seems to run just fine. When the car is shutdown the hissing noise sort of makes a short, rubbery screech noise like a bad acc. belt stopping.

Thanks for the correction. Lead bad for cat, silicone bad for O2 sensors. My mistake.

Im talking about the timing cover though, it has no connection with the exhaust what so ever.

It does if oil touches it.

just use the mercedes sealant that is used on all the new engines.
As far as the hissing noise, try a couple of things. First remove the belt and make sure the noise is not drive belt related or an accessory. Second did you check the crankcase ventilation hoses on the bottom of the intake? You can also spray brake clean or carb cleaner to check for leaks. If you do not find anything also are you sure that you did the timing chain tensioner correctly. it should be disassembled and reset and installed without the spring in. Then install the spring and secondary cover. Otherwise your noise could be to tight of a timing chain. |
