Viscous clutch fan
 

W124, M103 260e engine.

The fan blades can be bolted onto the viscous clutch both ways. Does this make a difference? Are the blades omni directional?

both ways...I don't think so...the fan can only go on one way...

Sorry to differ. Had the fan clutch out. Took fan blades off. Can fit back on either way.

Ivan, just look at the way the blades are turned/cupped. It should be obvious which directional rotation will be most efficient to draw air in through the grilles and over the engine. That's the rotation you want.

The Blades leading edge is towards the radiator............

Yes it can " fit" back either way, however only one way is correct, that which will pull the air through the radiator from front to back.

Which ever way you mount it the fan will pull air thru the radiator,the correct way will be more efficient. Mounting the fan backwards will NOT cause it to move air toward the radiator! regardless of popular opinion.Most often there is a curve to the blades,if so the concave side should be away from the radiator. Does the M103 engine rotate CCW as viewed from in front of the car looking at the engine?

Just this day I pulled the fan clutch off the engine . No matter which way you put the fan on the blades are the same direction.

However I made another important discovery. I cleaned the fan a little from a bit of black sludge and there written on the edge was the word.... "Front".:eek: Doh!:confused:

The engine turns clockwise when looking at it from the front. I suppose that's correct for the Southern Hemisphere:)
