Should I even Bother?

Have found a 1992 300 wagon for sale.

The only contact has been with owner via e mail. Owner has very few answers to my questions. So far I have learned the car is from California, body clean, unknown miles, 6 cylinder, has not run in 4 months, possible timing problem???, needs muffler. I can't even get pictures. Owner is asking $800.00.

What are the possible engine issues - head gasket?, wiring harness, evaporators, Etc.....

What else are issues with 1992 wagons. Any input would be helpful.

If you're a do-it-yourselfer then it would be a nice car to have. If you have to pay somebody to fix it then things add up fast. I bought my first wagon for 750$. I put a used engine in it along with a few needed items (mounts, axles, brakes) and had a great car for less than 2K$

62iia, it would be good to get someone you know and/or trust to take a look at the 1992 300 wagon for you. Then you'll have some idea whether it's worth paying for a PPI (pre-purchase inspection). Otherwise, you're taking a shot-in-the-dark. A neglected automobile could cost you thousands of dollars to resuscitate.

If the owner won't answer simple questions then that is a huge red flag IMHO. There are crazy people out there and life is too short to deal with them. Do youself a favor and look elsewhere.

Some sellers are blockheads. The more dense the seller, the lower the price offered by the buyer. Feel free to walk away.

Be prepared to get a used sedan motor and do a swap. Though you might get lucky and find that it's nothing more than a bad relay/sensor/fuel pump/adjustment.

Though like the other guys said, if you're not handy enough to swap a motor, you might want to skip this one.

I'm still trying to get more info from the owner.

If I don't get some soon I'll drop it. You would think someone selling a car would want to tell you about it.

I was thinking if I could steal it for $300-400 it would be worth it.

I don't know if this model is subject to the wire harness issues and head gasket.

I'm a pretty good DIY. I continue to keep my 62 Land Rover running and have replaced the engine, rebuilt the trans, brakes, clutch, swivel pins, most of the front body (deer at 60mph)

Is there any one in Northern Detroit that would possibly look but not buy?

Will keep you posted

And that reason alone would be enough for me. If the seller won't talk about his car, then the car is not worth talking about - it's got a lot more wrong with it than he's letting on, and if he tells you all the real crap that car has going wrong, you'll walk just like he'd walk if he were in your shoes.

This one's easy for me - I'd drop it fast.

For more info, regarding "wagon" model, see my posts in these threads:

NOTES
92 uses different injection system and bushings can be replaced in front A arms.
Otherwise mostly the same car. Search other posts for bad wiring harness years and ASR.
