So what happens to these sensors?
Rust, heat damage or just go out of electronic spec?

for me, heat damage to the insulation caused the insulation to just tear apart.

Yeah after 15-20+ years of heat and the elements....the wiring and plastic probably just breaks down. My tach sensor on my diesel was the same way....the end going into the sensor itself had started to come apart....can't really complain after 25 years though!

The sensors themselves can also go out of spec....but faulty cabling/connectors are probably the bigger cause of failure.

I replaced my CPS yesterday on the 300E.....running perfectly now! Old one tested just barely out of spec when I ran a test on it. Also, the bolt holding it in place was finger loose!! :eek:

It was a PAIN routing that cable....especially when its 14F outside. :dizzy2:

I did have to remove the oil filter, I tried to work around it but finally gave up and removed it.
