oil pool in intake manifold...emissions nightmare.
 
hey guys...last may, I tried to pass emissions, but no go...went to my indie and he did some really great **** in less than an hour, and off I went to pass my emissions; however, he said my pcv 2mm hole was clogged and needed to be cleaned. I said ok, but didnt have the money to have it done...well, I took the whole two weeks off work, and dissassembled my entire intake system and air pump tubes, and pcv 2mmport. took my time, looked like just off the showroom floor. Now, i drive the car for many short trips, and he (indie) said that that was causing my pcv system to clog and accumulate oil in the intake man. Well after restoring the intake man. and every part, hose, pipe, tube, clamp, and after rebuilding the entire system, I still have oil puddle accumulation in the basin of the intake...need more feedback as to the solution to this matter, cause may is coming up quick and i need solve this problem...the only thing i didn't do is clean something he called the "baffle" in the valve cover...how can i clean this and eliminate it as the problem... please advise...I'm wondering if my many short trips could really be causing this much oil accumulation in the intake manifold. any theories? please advise...thanks

It uses about a quart per month, and I drive 2 miles a day avg. Thats a quart every 120 miles or so (which sounds aweful); however, I can take the car on a long trip, and run through several tanks of gas (around 600 or 700 miles) and it hardly uses any. How does the oil get in there, where does it come from?

Is the oil there because I take a lot of short drives, or is the oil there because something isn't working properly?

Oil in the intake is normal. It gets there two ways. One is reversion from the engine and the other is your crank case ventilation.
Your oil consumption is high though for your normal driving. Check with your engine running if the oil cap bounces off the valve cover or does it sit still with it loose. This will give you an idea how much blow by you have. If it is still then you are ok.
I would check for leaks for the rate of oil loss for your daily commute.

One thing for sure is there are no leaks. The oil is burning through the engine. However, The car doesn't smoke at all at the tail pipe. So its burning it off fairly slow. My oil consumption estimate may be incorrect.

This M104 engine has 227,000 miles on it, so the oil consumption is expected to some degree. I will check the blow by as you suggest. Do you know if the oil in the intake comes and goes? If I drive the car for 1000 miles, will the oil eventually evaporate and be burned through the combustion chamber? I was told that the oil pool in the intake was the cause of my poor emmision test results. I was told if I corrected the pcv system and flow that the oil wouldnt get in there. The pcv system is functioning now, so I was disappointed to still see the oil in there.

Loosened oil filler cap and let it lay in place with the engine running: it didn't move at all. I moved it around to different positions making sure it was loose. So thats good news I guess.
