W201 Headlight questions.....

I have recently started using my 1993 190E as a commuter. My new job often lands me on the LA freeway system after dark and I have noticed the headlights are "sub par" to say the least. They are properly aimed and have fresh (Napa) bulbs as of last weekend, but they still are less than desirable.

I have done some searches and found that "Euro's" and "HID conversions" come up often. I will probably convert to "Euro's" in the future, but I wondered if anyone has had good results with a "HID" conversion? Cash is a bit tight right now with the Christmas season and a 3 month job search.

The "HID" conversions cost a whole lot less than a decent set of "Euro" headlamps, would a "HID" conversion be a reasonable stop gap remedy?
