CE vs E Engine Swap

Okay, there is an opportunity to buy an excellent cosmetic example of a 300CE that needs and engine as one of the pistons has a hole in it. Could rebuild the motor or buy a used motor from a yard.
Can you swap a 300e motor to a CE? If they are both M104's? Bolt up, use same brain?

Tried searching forum and saw no engine swap ideas. Maybe I'm just a forum newbie and can't figure it out... duh!

You need to tell us what the cars are - 300CEs had 3 different motors, 300Es had 4.

Even better if you can find out the engine number of the car you are looking at this will give a better clue.
Also your location. 300's of various types were different for different markets.
